February, 2007

The first 12 days of touring in February is challenging - 7 concerts featuring 3 different programs, 2 orchestra rehearsals, a masterclass, and an ill-timed bout with food poisoning in Santa Barbara which threatens to turn my LAGQ concerto debut into a disaster. :(

December, 2006-January, 2007

We start rehearsing a lot during this period. The guys have finally finished their concerts with Andy so it's time to break me in on the other rep. There are also pieces that are new to everybody which need to be rehearsed.

December, 2006

One thing on the to-do list is photos. It just so happens that Andy Summers of The Police is a friend of the group. And it just so happens that he is a serious photographer. So we end up hanging with Andy for an afternoon at his pad. Pretty cool! (I listened to the Police all through high school!) Andy's shots were excellent and were used on the web site and on our concert programs. Thanks, Mr. Summers!

October 13-14, 2006

We then have two more concerts with Luciana, in Atlanta and Wilmington, NC. I love the program. The repertoire includes some fantastic Brazilian music by Pascoal, Bellinati, a brilliant medley of Brazilian tunes arranged for the Quartet by Sergio Assad; a group of duets between Luciana and each member of the group.

After an afternoon sound-check at the hall, we go our separate ways to rest up for the concert. A nap would be nice, but forget it, the anticipation is too much.

October 5, 2006 - Madison, WI

We arrive in Madison (great town!) a couple days early so that we can squeeze a little more rehearsal in before the first concert. I am so excited that I can hardly sleep!

September, 2006

The first concert is only one month away! Time to learn a lot of music, once again. But I like it! The guys start giving me piles to add to my already substantial pile.

The first task is to learn the music for their upcoming collaboration with the amazing Brazilian singer Luciana Souza. For the Fall, I will only play on the concerts with Luciana, while Andy still handles all of the Quartet recital concerts.

Late August, 2006

After a long summer of trying to remain calm, I finally hear that I'm in! Wow!! It's hard to believe that it's real. And, in fact, it would take several months to sink in... How fortunate I am to be able to concertize (which is what I always wanted to do) with (in my opinion) the hippest, tightest, most innovative and active guitar ensemble in the world! Surreal.

Mid August, 2006

Audition No. 2 - After a couple of weeks in Europe (where they had played concerts and done more auditioning), the guys return to L.A. and hold another round of formal auditions. The featured piece in this round is the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 5 by Franz Lizst. This is a much larger scale work (about 8 minutes) than the pieces in the first audition. The Lizst is a fairly exhaustive audition piece. It has everything: singing melodies, fast arpeggios and scales, intricate ensemble challenges, and a wide range of moods. (I have really grown to love this piece.

Mid July, 2006

Audition No. 1 - Challenging, but I feel good about the way the audition went. It was actually enjoyable. I was a little anxious of course, given the life-changing nature of the gig, and how much I wanted it. But it helped that the guys are all about the music, and were also very down to earth and supportive. John, Bill, and Scott are 3 of the funniest people I know, so it also helped that they kept me laughing.
